I am very happy to be once again posting about the benefits of eating cereal for breakfast. As I have stated, my boys love eating cereal and not just for breakfast, they would eat it all day if I let them, which wouldn’t neccessarily be a bad thing considering the health  benefits.

Did you know that cereal is the number one dietary source of many key nutrients including iron, zinc and folic acid? Having one very picky, vegetables are icky, child, having him like and want to eat cereal, makes me feel better about him getting the nutrients he needs. Also, since a typical breakfast of cereal contributes to more than 30 percent of needed calcium, iron and B vitamins, I know that his little body is getting what it is lacking.

True story: The other day we went shopping and hen we came to the cereal isle, I told him to pick out the cereal he wanted and he surprised me by picking Chex, both the Cinnamon and Chocolate. I love Chex, but be honest, it’s not the first thing kids usually go for, am I right? It doesn’t have bright colors and marshmallows icon wink *Ended* Win a Cereal Dispenser Gift Pack Courtesy of General Mills #myblogspark Even though he chose Chex, Big G kids’ line of cereals contain at least 8 grams of whole grain (48 grams recommended daily) and is a good source of both calcium and vitamin D in every serving, so no matter what he chose, it’s a win-win situation.

Hi!
I think the best way to get kids to eat nutritious foods is by setting the example by eating them yourself. If a child wont try a new food, then have some and tell them how good it tastes and make a big deal out of the food item tasting great.

Kristie S June 28, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Actually I love cereal for getting some quick and easy nutrition in them. Just gotta watch the sugar content and make sure they like it at the same time.

I am already a follower on FB, I started following on Twitter, I tweeted it and requested emails.

Thanks!

I get my kids to eat healthier by giving them fruit popsicles instead of sugar ones, having them eat yogurt & fruit or “ants on a log” instead of chips and candy. It’s really hard to have any junk food in the house and convince them to make the healthier choice.

Suzzanne June 28, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Like most kids, my kids dont like most healthy foods, but I get my kids to eat the good stuff by telling them if they eat it, it well make them strong like a super hero, then after they eat it we run around acting like are fav heros. Mines wonderwomen ;)

Julie June 28, 2011 at 5:31 pm

One thing I try to do to get my kids to eat healthy is to have cut up fruit in the fridge. If it’s something they can grab and go then they are more than likely to eat it. :)

I am lucky in the fact that my kids really enjoy fruits and vegetables. My older son who is 12 was following a modified Weight Watchers with me and has learned how to read and understand the nutritional info on the back of foods. Don’t get me wrong they like their sweets. I let them have sweets in moderation. I make sure to make sure they eat a balanced meal by only offering them healthy choices for their main 3 meals a day.

Andrea Stanley June 28, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Well luckly I started my kids eating healthy from the beginning and find it very easy to introduce new foods since that is what they are used to. But when I have something we are struggling with I usually do a bit of bargaining!

I get my daughter to eat healthy foods, by eating them myself. She looks up to me (she’s only 3) haha, so she mimicks every move I make. I pretend to have fun with my veggies (though I’m not a huge fan of them myself), I over exaggarate on how wonderful they are and my excitement rubs off on her and she gets really excited about eating hers too! It’s actually quite entertaining to watch us sit down and eat carrots ;)

I always sneak the foods they need incognito with things they Love for example, My daughter HATES Chicken and Broccoli so what do I do? I use ground chick instead of ground beef in pasta dish and I cut the broccoli small enough and add it to the sauce… sneaky sneaky :)

Brynn Dexter June 28, 2011 at 6:35 pm

An easy way is to let them help you in the kitchen. they will have so much fun making it with you that they will be so proud and excited to eat it after

I blend cauliflower in my mashed potatoes and my kids do not know the difference. My children prefer non sugared cereals over sugared and refuse to put any sugar in cereals such as KIX and Cheerios

To get my girls to eat healthy, I reduce the amount of sugar in the house and provide fruits and vegetables to snack on. Some cereals they like are now offering reduced sugar cereals, which is fantastic! I can’t control what’s at their friend’s houses, but I can control what’s at mine. If it’s not here as a temptation, they won’t desire it.
